Heidelberg is a city in the Northwest of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Population is over 140 000. It is situated on the river Neckar. The first reference to Heidelberg can be found in a document in Schönau Abbey dated to 1196. This is considered the founding date for Heidelberg. But there was already settlements on this territory in the VI-VIII centuries (the first reference Handschuhsheim 765). In the 1907 remains of the Homo heidelbergensis ("Heidelberg Man"), who is the earliest evidence of human life in Europe, were found in Mauer, near Heidelberg. In the Middle Ages and in the early Modern Times the residence of Pfalzgrafs was situated there. The University of Heidelberg was foundied in 1386. In 1720 the residence of Prince-Elector was moved to Mannheim, and Hedelberg lost its political importance.
