Lisbon is the capital and the biggest port of Portugal, situated at the point where the river Tagus flows into the Atlantic Ocean. As the legend tells, it is a city founded and named by Ulysses or Olissopo. It has its origins in the Phoenician words "Allis Ubbo", meaning "enchanting port". The city was the part of Roman Lusitania since 205 BC. During this period, Lisbon (Olissopo) became one of the most significant cities in Iberian Peninsula and renamed Felicitas Julia. In 714, the Moors arrived to peninsula and resisted against Christian attacks for 400 years. It was reconquered 1147 by Dom Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal. Lisbon reached its peak of prosperity during the period of the Portuguese Empire in the 16th century.The XVI century marks the golden age for Lisbon. The city became the European hub of commerce with the Far East, while gold from Brazil also flooded into the city. However, this era did't take long: the earthquake of 1755 destroyed nearly entire city. The city was rebuilt by the Marques de Pombal, hence the designation of the lower town as Baixa Pombalina. In the first years of the 19th century, Portugal was invaded by the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte, in 1807 he occupied Lisbon, four years later it was returned .
