Moscow (Moskva) is the capital of Russia and the country's economic, financial, educational, and transportation centre. It is located on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, in the European part of Russia. The first Russian reference to Moscow can be found in Ipatievskaya chronicle from 1147. In 1480, Ivan III had finally broken the Russians free from Mongol-Tatar control, which lastet 240 years, allowing Moscow to become the centre of power in Russia. Ivan III relocated the Russian capital to Moscow (the previous capital was Vladimir). The city ceased to be Russia's capital in 1712, after the founding of St. Petersburg by Peter the Great on the Baltic coast in 1703. When Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812, the Muscovites burned the city and evacuated, as Napoleon's forces were approaching on 14 September. Napoleon's army, plagued by hunger and cold, was forced to retreat and was nearly annihilated by the devastating Russian winter and sporadic attacks by Russian military forces. On March 12, 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Soviet Union less than five years later. During the Great Patriotic War (a part of World War II after German invasion in the USSR), the Soviet State Committee of Defence and the General Staff of the Red Army was located in Moscow. On May 8, 1965 in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the victory in World War II, Moscow was one of twelve Soviet cities awarded the title of the Hero City. In 1980, it hosted the Summer Olympic Games.

Самое раннее упоминание будущей столицы России содержится в Ипатьевской летописи. 4 апреля 1147 г. В 1480 году Иван III после освободил Русь от Татаро-Монголского ига, продолжавшегося 240 лет, что позволило Москве стать силовым центром. Куда он и перенес столицу (до этого - Владимир). Город перестает быть столицей в 1712 году, когда Петр I переносит столицу в Санкт-Петербург, основанный на побережье Балтийского моря в 1703. Когда Наполеон вторгся в Россию в 1812 г., москвичи сожгли и покинули город, когда Наполеоновские войска подошли к ней 14 сентября. Наполеоновская армия, изнуренная голодом и холодом, была вынуждена отступить и была практически уничтожена морозной зимой и аттаками русских партизан. 12 марте 1918 Москва становится столицей РСФСР и через 5 лет СССР. Во время Второй Мировой Войны Министерство обороны и Генералльный штаб Красной Армии находились в Москве. 8 мая 1965 года, на 20 лет победы в Великой Отечественной Войне, Москва удостоилась звания города-героя. В 1980 году Москва принимала Олимпийские игры.
