Saint Petersburg is a city and a federal subject located in Northwestern Federal District of Russia on the Neva River at the east end of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. St. Petersburg's informal name, Piter, is based on how Peter the Great was called by foreigners. The city's other names were Petrograd (1914ñ1924) and Leningrad (1924ñ1991). Founded by Peter the Great on May 27, 1703 to be his "window to Europe", it was capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years (1712-1728, 1732-1918). During World War I, the name Sankt Peterburg was seen to be too German, so the city was renamed Petrograd. St. Petersburg ceased being the capital in 1918 after the Russian Revolution of 1917. During World War II, Leningrad was surrounded and besieged by the German Wehrmacht from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944, a total of 29 months. By Hitler's order the Wehrmacht constantly shelled and bombed the city and systematically isolated it from any supplies, causing death of more than 1 million civilians in 3 years; 650 thousand died in 1942 alone. For the heroic resistance of the city and tenacity of the survivors of the Nazi Siege, Leningrad was the first city in the former USSR awarded the title Hero City in 1945.

Санкт-Петербург является городом федерального значения и административным центром Ленинградской области в Северо-Восточном Федеральном округе, стоящий на реке Неве в восточной части Финского Залива на Балтийском море. Неофициально Петербург называют Питер, так называли Петра Великого иностранцы. В свое время Питер носил имя Петроград (1914-1924) и Ленинград (1924-1991). Основанный Петром Великим 27 мая 1703 года и предназначенный быть "окном в Европу", Петербург был столицей Россий более чем 200 лет (1712-1728, 1732-1918) . Во время Первой Мировой войны, Петербург был переименован на немецкий манер в Петроград. В 1918 году, после Великой Октябрьской Революции, столица была перенесена. Во время Второй мировой войны Ленинград находился в Блокаде нацистских войск, 27 января 1944 блокада, продолжавшаяся 29 месяцев с 8 сентября 1941, была снята. В окруженном и подвергавшемуся обстрелам городе, систематически лишенного поставок продовольствия и необходимых товаров, за 3 года погибло более миллиона жителей; 650 тысяч умерло только в 1942. За героическое сопротивление и стойкость, проявленную во время Блокады, город первым из всех городов бывшего СССР, получил звание города-героя в 1945г.
